Need of Management
Although
the theoretical background of the subject was established in last few
centuries, history of management runs back to thousands of years. Collective
effort is the basis of management. No one can live alone in current social
production system. Each and everybody have to depend on others. All of us are
belonging to organizations. People have to be organized to achieve long or
short time goals. (Sutcliffe et al, 2000)
Mankind has gone through five major production systems in the history. The management concepts were there in each of those production systems. Hunting man had to be organized themselves to attack the animal. In the animal husbandry production system, men and women differentiated their jobs to be more organized. Agricultural system applied various management concepts to achieve their organizational goals. Feudal production system was managed by the king (Karl, 2007). He also practiced and introduced many management concepts to lead the society and people forward. Sumerian’s administrational systems and Hammurabi codes of constitution, Sun Tzu’s Chinese administration and military structure, Koutilya’s theory of Economics are some example for management practices in administrative perspective. Egyptian Pyramids, Great Wall of China, and Great Reservoirs could be given as example for manufacturing management practices.
Industrialization is also a result of the development of management concepts. Adam Smith’s divisional labour concept greatly influenced the industrial revolution (Link and Hebert, 1987). The world population is increasing rapidly. In contrast, natural resources are being diminished speedily. Under this situation there is a competition for the acquisition of resources among nations and societies. Due to the shortage of resource, people are compelled to use resources more efficiently. Efficient usage of resource is also one need of management. Developments of communication systems and international transportation has created a close and open global market at present. Due to this reason human needs have been magnified greatly. To purchase diversified human needs, people need more money. Everybody need higher salaries. Therefore manpower cost has risen greatly in every field. That is why human resource has to be managed carefully. In this highly competitive global order, productivity has become the keyword in every subject. Proper management is the solution to achieve productivity. However in general management could be defined as the subject of , “Empowering people to achieve organization goals in the best way”. (Bekirogullari, 2019)
